Alejandra Sarmiento is a biologist, with a Ph.D. in Agricultural Science. Her research focuses on the effects cultivation systems, such as coffee agroforestry systems, have on the environment (microclimate) and resource availability (particularly on water) within the cultivation system. As well as how coffee trees respond to environmental stresses such as drought, heat and excessive radiation.
During her work in the tropics, communication with farmers was essential to understand farmers’ challenges and worries and to exchange knowledge and experiences. Thus, she realized that when there is not a commonly spoken language, visuals are a great communication alley.
She believes that increasing and improving the use of SUA VISUALS (Sound, useful and appealing visuals) can help to build bridges within the scientific community and between scientists and general audiences. And in this way better tackle current societal and environmental challenges.
